QUEER CALIFORNIA: Untold Stories

hosted by the Oakland Museum of Art

September 26, 2018 — February 3, 2019

Powerful examples of social activism through contemporary artworks and historical materials go beyond the mainstream of queer history in this exhibition. With stories focusing on transgender communities, people of color, women, and other folks at the margins of history, this exhibition deepens and expands the understanding of California’s queer history. A physical incarnation of MOTHA installed within the gallery walls was decked out with artwork, archival materials, and ephemera with walls covered in black-and-white digital drawings of California’s iconic queer historical figures and landmarks.

Contributions by Absolute Empress III Shirley, Tina Valentin Aguirre, Pat Campano, Jerome Caja, Willy Chavarria, The Cockettes, DJ Brown Amy (Amy Martinez), Rhys Ernst, Nicki Green, Vero Majano, Miss Major, Toshio Meronek, Kari Orvik, Augie Robles, José Sarria, and Sylvester.

Curated by Christina Linden.
